I’m so thrilled with the great Spring weather we’ve been having lately (finally!). Spring and Summer are my favourite seasons for dresses. I was happy to come across this adorable polka dot midi dress at Suzy Shier. I normally don’t go for clothing in orange as I find it doesn’t look that great with my skin tone, but this dress was an exception. I love the polka dot pattern and the pleat details in the skirt of the dress. I also like that this dress has an enhanced waist to give it more shape. This dress is so comfortable to wear and it looks so classy. You can also find it in a darker green colour (I bought it in both colours).
I paired this dress with a straw clutch I picked up last year and my favourite Sam Edelman block heels in a nude colour. I also added some white bauble drop earrings I bought last year from Suzy. I’ve linked some similar items at the bottom of this post.
What’s your favourite style of dress for Spring/Summer?
Can you believe it’s November already! Although it doesn’t feel like Fall anymore (it’s gotten much colder here in Ottawa) Fall fashion is still around unlike some of the leaves on the trees. As it’s gotten colder I’ve switched out my Summer dresses for sweater dresses. I came across this comfortable yet chic leaf print sweater dress at Suzy Shier. The three-quarter sleeves and midi length of this dress make it a great workwear choice.
I love the leaf print as it resembles the leaves changing colour in the Fall. I paired this dress with some burgundy opaque tights as I wanted to pick up on the colour in the dress. I also added some matching burgundy pumps. In keeping with the Fall theme I found this adorable felt hat that went perfectly with the light brown colour in the print.
Fall coats are another item I love and I added a warm and cozy wrap coat to this look to finish it off. I picked up this coat at Suzy Shier and it comes in four other colours. I also got it in red – for Christmas perhaps?
P.S. Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year and I will be starting my series of holiday posts soon so stay tuned!
It’s been a while since my last post as I’ve been quite busy with my day job. Since I’ve been occupied with work I thought a workwear post would be appropriate. Plaid is a Fall staple and I was able to keep up with the trend with these belted high-waisted plaid pants from Suzy Shier.
These pants are so comfortable and flattering. The belt accentuates the waist and instantly gives you more shape. The pants are cropped at the ankle and perfect for pairing with your favourite pair of work pumps.
I styled these pants with a classic white work shirt. I typically don’t like long sleeved shirts so I opted for a more casual look and rolled up the sleeves. I added some pearls for some femininity to off-set this menswear inspired look.
What do you think about plaid for Fall, can you make it work?
It’s Wednesday and in my world that means one thing – Work Wear Wednesday! I don’t know about you but I’m totally loving pastels this Fall so I was overjoyed when I came across this pink power suit at Suzy Shier. Pastels aren’t typically Fall colours but adding a little dusty rose to your Autumn wardrobe is a great way to incorporate some colour.
I love this pink suit as it adds some femininity to my work clothes. I have many other business suits but they’re typically grey or black – not the most interesting choice of colours. I’m also a fan of the pearl button details on the blazer that give it an extra layer of class and finesse.
I paired this suit with a high neck ruffle blouse that I also picked up at Suzy Shier. The ruffle detail in the neckline and the smocking on the sleeves add to the feminine flair of this outfit. I wanted to go for a monochrome chic look with this suit. I added a pair of pink kitten heels and my go-to tote the Louis Vuitton neverfull MM. I have the neverfull in Damier Ebene (brown) and Damier Azur (white) as it’s such a versatile bag and a great investment piece.
What do you think about pastels for Fall?
Special thanks to Suzy Shier for sponsoring this post.
I’m so pleased to announce that I’ve collaborated with Canadian retailer Suzy Shier to bring you some of my favourite workwear pieces and tips for great 9 to 5 style. I was recently interviewed for their Suzy’s Stories blog. You can read my interview below 🙂 Special thanks to Suzy Shier for sponsoring this post.
Hi Praveeni, thanks so much for joining us! So, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from and what do you do for a living? I was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Canada as a child. I’ve been living in Ottawa for about 26 years so I pretty much grew up here. I work as a Project Manager and Professor at a local College where I teach international business.
How do you balance being a fashion blogger and working full time? There’s definitely a lot of planning that goes in to balancing blogging and working full time. I like to think I’m pretty good at managing my time. I plan out my outfits and photoshoots for the week. Most of my photos are taken on the weekends – like the name of my blog The Weekend Fashionista suggests.
How and why did you get into blogging?
I’ve always loved fashion and putting outfits and looks together. Over the years I’ve had friends and co-workers ask me where I got my clothing or accessories so I thought what better way to tell them than through a blog. I started documenting my daily style as a hobby and sharing links to the pieces I love with friends.
As you love fashion so much, would you ever consider working in the fashion industry? I think working in the fashion industry would be an exciting experience. If the right opportunity came along it’s definitely something I would consider. I’d love to contribute to a collection someday, perhaps curating a Weekend Fashionista collection 😉
How do you show your personal style AND stay looking professional in the work place? Any tips? I find accessories and accent pieces are a great way to show off your personal style in the workplace. I like to incorporate colour and texture in to my workwear wardrobe. I prefer a more feminine look so I’m usually in a dress or skirt at work. Whether it’s a printed blazer, a colourblock dress or a statement necklace there’s always a way to show off your personality and keep things professional at the same time.
If you have a big meeting at work, what will you wear to feel confident? This is a tough one. I usually wear dresses to work and a structured work dress is a great confidence booster. For a more formal meeting I might throw on a blazer on top of the dress. I may also go for pants and a matching blazer, there’s a reason it’s called a power suit after all. When you’re wearing an outfit that you love you instantly feel more confident.
What’s your go-to outfit outside of the office? Outside of the office my style is pretty relaxed and casual. On the weekend you can usually find me in a pair of jeans or jeggings and a sweater or blouse. I may throw on the occasional blazer if I’ve got dinner plans etc. after my weekend errands. Weekends are also great for showing off your creativity so I definitely enjoy getting dressed up and going out in the evenings.
What are some of your favourite workwear picks from our latest collection? There’s so many great pieces in your latest collection it’s hard to choose just a few but here are some of the pieces I’m currently loving:
This sheath dress is so chic! It totally gives me the Chanel vibes with the fabric and cut. This blouse is so pretty, I especially like the smocking on the sleeves and the ruffle neck. This skirt would look great with a pair of opaque tights and a blouse – perfect for Fall and Winter. Fall florals are all the rage and I’m loving the print on this blouse and the detail in the buttons. I love the feminine detail of the pearl button on this dusty pink blazer, so pretty!
What are your top 3 fashion tips for great 9 to 5 style? 1. Aim for a polished and professional look
Look for fit when shopping for workwear pieces and if that blazer you absolutely love is just a tad baggier than you’d like, consider getting it altered for a better fit. Make sure you don’t have any stray threads or tags hanging off your clothing and always iron or press your clothes. A well pressed outfit just looks more polished and professional.
2. Personalize your workwear looks
Don’t be afraid to show off your personality by incorporating colour or accessories in to your workwear wardrobe. Just be respectful of your workplace’s dress code
3. Add some feminine flair to your workwear
Many people think that workwear should be boring and restricted to black or grey pant suits but a feminine structured dress or skirt does the job too. I find myself drawn to colourful work dresses and feminine details on blouses and skirts. Dresses and skirts are versatile pieces as you can wear them year round, simply add opaque tights and a cardigan for the Fall and Winter.
When it comes to having great style and looking well put together I think Coco Chanel said it best “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman”
Yikes! It’s been a while since my last post. I’ve been so busy with life in general that I haven’t had much time to sit down and actually write a post. I have however been keeping up on Instagram 🙂
Time has flown by so fast, can you believe Canada Day is less than a week away?! I don’t know about you but I always go all out with my outfit for Canada Day. It’s the one day of the year where you can wear your red, white and maple proudly and unabashedly!
I found the most adorable Canada Day dress at Suzy Shier and I’m just thrilled to be able to share it with you. What better way to celebrate Canada Day than by wearing a dress from one of the country’s oldest and best known retailers. Fun fact – Suzy Shier was founded in 1966 and has been around for over 50 years with over 140 stores across Canada!
This red and white printed dress is the perfect way to show off your Canadian pride. The butterfly details in the print are so feminine and the dress is super comfy to wear. It’s light and airy just like a butterfly, I love the way the skirt of the dress flutters when the wind catches it. My dress is part of Suzy’s High Tea collection that’s currently available in stores and online. This collection focuses on feminine florals and prints with a splash of red for colour.
I liked the vintage look of this dress and decided to play in to the vintage vibe when I styled it. I paired this dress with an adorable picnic basket bag that I picked up on my travels (I’ll share more about my most recent trip in an upcoming post). For accessories I added my favourite pair of white wedges with a bow detail. In keeping with the vintage flair I added a fascinator that I found at Unique Accessories last year.
How are you showing off your Canadian pride and celebrating Canada Day this year? Wearing red and white perhaps?
Yay it’s finally feeling like Spring in Ottawa this weekend! I don’t know about you but I’ve been noticing polka dots on just about everything in stores right now. I think I found the perfect polka dot dress for Spring this year. How adorable is this sage polka dot dress from Suzy Shier.
This dress is under $50 and has a V neckline and a tie around the waist for a classic silhouette. I find the dress almost has a retro feel to it. The sleeveless design makes it perfect to pair with a light cardigan for a cooler Spring day. For this look I paired the dress with some white wedge heels with a bow detail at the front, white beaded earrings and my Cult Gaia Ark bag.
Does this dress by any chance remind you of another famous polka dot dress? I couldn’t help but think of Julia Roberts’ polo dress from Pretty Woman when I saw this dress in store. Of course hers was brown and this is sage 😉 Speaking of polo I’m considering attending an event taking place in Ottawa this Summer called Polo In The Park. This event takes place on July 7, 2018 and tickets are currently on sale! Check out their website (linked in this post) for details. The event is held in support of two charities, Wounded Warriors Canada and the Rotary Club of Ottawa South. Have you attended Polo In The Park before? If so how was your experience? Let me know in the comments below.
I don’t know about you but I’m loving all the new Spring florals and pastels that are out in stores right now (even though I can’t wear them yet). If you follow my blog you probably noticed that I shop at Suzy Shier – a lot! I’m thrilled to share another fab Suzy find. I found the cutest printed bell sleeve top in Suzy Shier’s Eastern Airs collection.
This top comes in pastel green, a classic Spring colour with splashes of pink and creme in the print. The design on this top is reminiscent of the Chinoiserie chic trend that was all the rage last year. I love the feminine print of cranes and flowers on this top. The double bell sleeves are a fun frilly accent and give the top a light and airy feel. Goes perfectly with the crane print don’t you think? This top also has a tie in the back to keep it in place. You can adjust the back tie to your linking for a loose or tighter fit.
For a fun frilly Spring look I paired this top with a pair of white jeans (a Spring must-have) and some taupe ankle boots. I also found the perfect earrings for this top at Suzy Shier. If you haven’t checked out their accessories yet you’re missing out! They have many adorable styles to choose from at very reasonable prices!
I wore this Spring outfit to the pop-up flower market at the Rideau Centre. I thought it matched the the setting perfectly 🙂
In case you haven’t noticed or you’re new to my blog, Suzy Shier is one of my favourite places to shop. I make it a point to shop a lot of Canadian retailers and Suzy is definitely at the top of my list. I always end up leaving with something whenever I visit one of their stores. I’m totally loving their Spring collection this year especially their Spring dresses. I’ve put together a collection of some of my favourite Spring dresses from Suzy Shier
1. Tropical Print Shirt Dress
The first dress I came across was an immediate favourite. This tropical printed shirt dress is perfect for an early Spring getaway or a Summer Saturday. Palm print is one of my all time favourite prints, go figure I’m from an island right?! I love the tropical feel of this dress it’s like an instant vacation and makes me so happy! I paired it with theses bright yellow earrings and a straw bag from Forever 21. This bag is a must have for Spring and Summer. It’s only $25 and can transition from a shoulder bag to a clutch so you get 2 bags in one 🙂 My dress was also reasonably priced at just $39.
2. Floral Wrap Front Dress
I found a cute and comfy floral wrap front dress that works well for the office and after hours cocktails. I like the muted green and pink pastels in this dress. This dress has a bit of spandex blend in it so it stretches to fit your body but is comfortable enough to wear throughout a workday. I also found a matching necklace and earrings in-store at Suzy Shier. The green and pink jewels on the necklace complement the colours on the dress perfectly, it’s almost like these pieces were made for each other 🙂 The necklace is $18 and the earrings are just $10! The dress is a steal at $39.
3. Red Floral Wrap Dress
Red is a colour that is totally on trend this Spring and I’m so thrilled to have found this red floral wrap dress. This dress is so feminine and frilly that you’ll love being the lady in red. This is a versatile dress that can be styled as a formal or casual piece. I opted for a casual look and paired it with a straw pom pom clutch. The dress and clutch also went perfectly with my wooden watch from JORD (don’t forget to enter my giveaway ;)). Keeping with the muted nude tones of my accessories I added a pair of wedge heels from Lucky Brand. My dress again cost just $35!
Three dresses for under $40 each! I was so pleased to find these three dresses and the best part is they were on sale! Suzy Shier regularly has 30% and 40% off sales and offers a great loyalty program – the Prestige Card. If you haven’t signed up yet you should as prestige card members save an additional 10% off on every purchase! Have you been to Suzy Shier lately? If so what are some of your favourite Spring pieces?
Spring cannot be here sooner! I’m happy to see that many stores have their Spring collections out and florals seem to be on trend! I found this cute floral sweater dress at Suzy Shier which is perfect for the Winter to Spring transition we’re going through right now. The three-quarter sleeves and modest length make this dress work appropriate. I love the floral design on the dress which gives it a Ted Baker inspired look. I paired this dress with opaque navy tights but you can wear it with flesh coloured tights as well. The best part about this dress is that it costs under $50! If you have a prestige card you’ll automatically get an additional 10% off. Suzy Shier also has some great deals on at the moment so check them out if you’re looking for some new pieces for Spring 🙂
